India-Australia Relations Maturing: Focus on CECA Negotiations

01 November 2023 | International Relations

Australia’s Opposition Leader, Peter Dutton, has underscored the mature relationship between India and Australia, highlighting the need for a considerate approach to sensitivities, particularly in the dairy and certain agricultural sectors, within the framework of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). Dutton has emphasized the importance of prioritizing critical minerals, education, defense, and various agricultural items in CECA negotiations to enhance economic collaboration.

In April 2022, the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) covered a broad spectrum of goods but omitted sensitive areas like dairy and certain agricultural products, along with substantial concessions in the services sector. Negotiations for the ambitious CECA have now recommenced with the aim of building upon the foundation established by the ECTA.

Dutton has pointed out the significant potential in the agriculture sector, despite its sensitivities. He has also highlighted opportunities in critical minerals and mining, where Australia can support India’s energy security and foster collaboration with South Korea and Japan. Additionally, the defense and education sectors offer room for growth and cooperation as trust continues to strengthen between the two nations.
