Ease of Doing Business: FSSAI Waives Clearance for Re-exported Food Imports

18 October 2023 | Import/Export

There have been important changes pertaining to imports, as advised by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The Customs Department is no longer required to obtain FSSAI clearances for specific imported food ingredients and products when using FSSAI, according to recent changes.

Previously, food consignments meant for captive use or the production of value-added goods for 100% export or re-export were being cleared by importers slowly. The recent ruling by the FSSAI attempts to make business operations easier.

Unless otherwise noted, import food articles meant for export are no longer subject to referral to the Food Authority. Food items, ingredients, and additives imported by producers or processors for internal use, value-added manufacturing intended for 100% export, sister companies, or wholly-owned subsidiaries are also exempt from FSSAI clearance. They must, however, be accompanied by a health/sanitary certificate issued by the appropriate body in the exporting nation.

Food importers are required to declare that the food is not meant for domestic consumption. This action facilitates the ease of doing business in the import and export of food products by streamlining the import procedure.

With the reduction of administrative burdens and acceleration of the import process for goods intended for export and value addition, the FSSAI’s regulatory changes are a welcome relief for importers and food manufacturers.
